Pastors Lynne and Jim Hammond | October 10, 2021
Recap:
What a great weekend we had. Pastor Jim shared at all our weekend services his eighth message in his series You Shall Receive Power. He has been sharing on Saturday nights about the gifts of the Holy Spirit. This weekend, he talked about the gifts of tongues and interpretation of tongues. Sunday morning services received a special treat, for Pastor Lynne spoke up and shared on these important gifts as well!
Dive Deeper:
You don’t have to be perfect to receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit. They are free gifts from God to us. We receive power for this life through the various gifts available to us through the Holy Spirit. Our job is to be aware of them and desire them to be a part of our lives. (You can read the full list of gifts over in 1 Corinthians chapter 12.)
This weekend, Pastors Jim and Lynne talked about how tongues and interpretation of tongues work, both in a corporate setting and in an individual setting. Pastor Jim pointed out how fascinating it is that God chose words as a pathway to direct and show His power here on this earth. It’s a reminder of how powerful words are, for according to James chapter 3, if you control your words, you can control your whole body.
Within a corporate setting, an unknown tongue needs to be interpreted through its twin gift, interpretation of tongues. At home, you can pray in tongues to edify yourself and pray about that which you don’t understand. Your prayer language will expand in you as you practice it… so use it! It’s a powerful gift that God has made available for our spiritual growth.
So if you don’t yet have your prayer language, go ahead and ask God for it. If you have your prayer language, use it! That is your thumbprint before heaven. God wants you to communicate with Him in this way, and then expect to interpret your tongue.

1 Corinthians 12:1 KJV
Now concerning spiritual gifts, brethren, I would not have you ignorant.
1 Corinthians 12:8-10 KJV
For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; to another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; to another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:
Acts 2:1-4 KJV
And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
James 3:2-4 KJV
For in many things we offend all. If any man offend not in word, the same is a perfect man, and able also to bridle the whole body. Behold, we put bits in the horses’ mouths, that they may obey us; and we turn about their whole body. Behold also the ships, which though they be so great, and are driven of fierce winds, yet are they turned about with a very small helm, whithersoever the governor listeth.
James 3:8 KJV
But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison.
1 Corinthians 14:18-19 KJV
I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue.
1 Corinthians 14:2 KJV
For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.
1 Corinthians 14:22-26 KJV
Wherefore tongues are for a sign, not to them that believe, but to them that believe not: but prophesying serveth not for them that believe not, but for them which believe. If therefore the whole church be come together into one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those that are unlearned, or unbelievers, will they not say that ye are mad? But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: and thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. How is it then, brethren? when ye come together, every one of you hath a psalm, hath a doctrine, hath a tongue, hath a revelation, hath an interpretation. Let all things be done unto edifying.
1 Corinthians 13:1 KJV
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.
1 Corinthians 14:13 KJV
Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret.
