As kids gain Internet access on cell phones, portable gaming devices and more, they end up spending as much time in an online world as in the real one. The powerful role of the Internet in young people's lives is undeniable. And while Internet use can be rewarding, there are also risks posed by an unregulated online environment, from online predation to addiction to cyberbullying. We must try to bridge the "digital divide" that often exists between "digital natives" and "digital immigrants" in order to foster understanding and positive communication about online activities. As we do, we'll understand and minimize risks associated with living in an increasingly digital world.
